Base64 Encoder / Decoder
Turn text or a file into Base64, or decode Base64 back into readable text, an image or a downloadable file. It converts as you type, handles emoji and accents correctly, and spots what kind of file is hidden inside.
- Nothing is uploaded
- Standard, URL-safe and MIME
- Detects files and JWTs

What is Base64?
Base64 writes any data, including images and other files, using only 64 safe characters (A-Z, a-z, 0-9, + and /), so it can travel through systems built for text: email attachments, JSON, web pages, configuration files and tokens. It makes data about a third bigger.
- It isn't encryption. Anyone can decode it, so never use it to hide passwords or personal data.
- URL-safe Base64 swaps + and / for - and _, and often drops the = padding. It's used in web addresses, JWTs and many APIs.
- MIME (email) breaks lines every 76 characters; PEM certificates and keys break every 64.
Decoding tips
- Spaces, line breaks, missing padding and data URI prefixes (
data:image/png;base64,) are ignored, and standard and URL-safe characters are both accepted. - If the result isn't text, we tell you what kind of file it is, show images, and let you download it.
- Paste a JWT (three dot-separated parts) to read its header and claims. The signature isn't checked, so don't trust its contents on their own.
- Suspicious data from an email or a web page? Download decoded files only if you trust the source, and scan them before opening.
