What is an IP address?

Every device that talks on the internet needs an address so replies can find their way back, much like a postal address. Your router is given a public IP address by your internet provider, and every device in your home or office shares it when it talks to the outside world. Inside your network, devices use private addresses such as 192.168.1.20, which websites never see.

Most home connections get a dynamic address that can change when the router restarts. Businesses often pay for a static address that never changes, which is useful for remote access, VPNs and email servers.

IPv4 and IPv6

IPv4 addresses look like 81.2.69.160 and there are only about 4.3 billion of them, so many providers now share one address between several customers. IPv6 addresses look like 2a00:23c5:e34::1 and there are enough for every device to have its own.

Your IP address shows roughly which provider and country you're connecting from, but not your name or street address. Only your provider can link an address to an account, and it needs a legal reason to share that.

Why does my IP address show a different town or country?

Addresses are registered to the provider's network, not your house. Mobile networks and VPNs often route traffic through another city or country, so location databases can be miles out.

How do I hide my IP address?

A reputable VPN or Tor replaces your address with theirs. Check it's working with our leak test, because WebRTC and DNS can still give away your real connection.

Can someone hack me with my IP address?

Knowing your address alone doesn't let anyone into your devices. Keep your router updated, change its default password, and turn off remote management and port forwarding you don't use.
