Ping Test
Is a server up, and how quickly does it answer? Ping any website or IP address from our server in the UK, test a TCP port when ping is blocked, or ping your own connection to see if it's reachable from outside.
- Latency, jitter and loss
- From our UK server
- ICMP or TCP port
Reading the results
- Latency (ms): the time for a message to get there and back. Within the UK expect 5 to 30 ms, to Europe 15 to 50 ms, to the US 70 to 140 ms.
- Jitter: how much the times vary. Low jitter matters for calls and gaming.
- Packet loss: any loss to a server that normally answers points to a congested or faulty link.
- No replies? Many servers, firewalls and home routers block ping on purpose. Try the TCP port method with 443 (websites) or 80 to see if the server is really up.
Ping, but from your own computer
This tests from our server to the target. To test from your own connection, open Command Prompt (Windows) or Terminal (Mac and Linux) and type ping example.com. For a longer test of your own line, use the Internet Stability Checker, and to see the route packets take, use the Traceroute tool.
