Unix Timestamp Converter

Turn a Unix timestamp into a real date and time, in UTC, your own time zone or anywhere else, or turn a date back into a timestamp. It spots seconds, milliseconds, microseconds and nanoseconds automatically, and handles Excel, Windows and .NET date formats too.

Paste log lines, JSON or CSV. Every 10-digit (seconds) and 13-digit (milliseconds) timestamp from 2001 to 2286 gets its date added alongside.

What is Unix time?

Unix time (also called epoch time or POSIX time) counts the seconds since midnight UTC on 1 January 1970, ignoring leap seconds. It's the same everywhere in the world at the same moment, which is why computers use it. Time zones only matter when you turn it into a date for people to read.

  • 10 digits is seconds (most Unix tools, PHP, Python, databases).
  • 13 digits is milliseconds (JavaScript, Java, many APIs).
  • 16 and 19 digits are microseconds and nanoseconds (Go, logs, tracing tools).

Other date formats

  • Excel stores dates as days since 30 December 1899 (so 1 January 1900 is 1), with the time as a fraction of a day.
  • Windows FILETIME and Active Directory (LDAP) times such as lastLogonTimestamp count 100-nanosecond steps since 1 January 1601.
  • .NET ticks count 100-nanosecond steps since 1 January in year 1.
  • The year 2038 problem: systems that store Unix time in a signed 32-bit number overflow at 03:14:07 UTC on 19 January 2038 (2147483647). Check old devices and databases.
