Which kind should I use?
- Random characters: the strongest for their length. Best for anything a password manager fills in for you. 16 or more characters is very strong.
- Passphrase: random words are much easier to type and remember. Six or more words is strong; use seven or eight for a password manager's master password or your email.
- Pronounceable: made-up syllables that are easier to read out or type on a phone or TV, while still being random.
- PIN: digits only, for phones, cards and door codes. We skip obvious ones like 1234 and 1111.
How they're made
- Every character and word is picked by your browser's cryptographic random number generator (
crypto.getRandomValues), without the small biases simpler generators have. - Nothing is sent to our server or stored. Close the page and they're gone, so copy what you need into your password manager.
- The strength shown is worked out from how the password was made (the number of possible passwords), which is the true measure for random passwords.
- Test any existing password with the Password Strength Tester, or make API keys and secrets with the Key Generator.
